After staying overnight in yet another Pilot
truck stop, this time in Santa Nella,
CA, Jennifer and I walked across the street to Carl’s
Jr. for breakfast. I ordered the Sourdough Breakfast Sandwich Combo with
hashbrowns and a small Barq’s. Jennifer proceeded to order the same (copycat),
and then we got our drinks and found a table. They brought our order to us and
we both started on the hashbrowns. She began to un-wrap her sandwich as she
asked what was on it. Did she really order something without knowing what was
on it? After a short mission between the sourdough slices, she realizes there
is ham involved. And that’s it. No more. She’s not a big fan of the ham,
see. I of course am now charged with eating both of these fairly large,
cholesterol enriched breakfast burgers. I do like them though, as Jennifer
readily pointed out still refusing. I even asked if I could go get the ham
taken off and add bacon, a reasonable offer I thought … wrong. Oh well, I
killed the first, and after a short break of eating the rest of my fried potato
circles, I started in on the second. It was just as delicious as the first as I
began. A few bites in however, I swear I could feel my arteries hardening and
my heart begin to struggle against the grease. I think it could have been
begging me to stop. But obviously needing to show my true manliness, I powered
through. I took care of #2 in pretty good time too … as I am sure #2 will be
taking care of me later.
The Elk
We spent the night about 40 miles south of
Eugene,
OR and this morning decided to head west to
US 101 and head down the coast toward
California. We took a two lane
highway from I-5 to 101 and on the way we stopped at an elk preserve. It was
great, Elk, an animal I have never seen outside of a zoo, were hanging out
everywhere. As we got out, an old man that was working the preserve said as his
opening line, “Yer a fur piece from home, ain’t ya?” … made me feel like I was
back in East Tennessee. He then told us a few things about the area and to keep
the dog on the leash, so he wouldn’t spook the elk. We walked down the fence
with Beast to see 7 bulls that had gathered together about 20-30 yards from the
sidewalk. As we approached, all 7 watched Beast intently. A few looked away
and carried on with their day pretty quickly, but a few kept watching him for a
good 10 minutes. Eventually all was calm and a couple of them started to catch
some z’s. We even had the chance to see two of them lock horns, playfully, as
if they were just putting on a show. They are magnificent creatures and a sight
to behold in their natural habitat, even if it was a preserve.

Yeah, we're lacking in
band reviews . . . but we'd have to blame that on lack of
disposable funds, along with conflicting schedules -- a hardship
of being on the move. We get invites to shows daily, but
most are completely out of the tri-state area where we are
currently located at the time, at best. We DID come across
a really cool dude during a shoot in Moab, Utah. He had
just moved to the area, and was out sightseeing at the Arches
National Park. Jeff and the camera were both located on
TOP of the RV doing a 360 degree shot at the time the guy pulled
up to take still photos in the same area. He chatted with
us for a few, and invited us to his show in town that night.
He gave us his card indicating his talent as a one-man band, and
gave us permission to film the show, too. Long story
short, we went to the show location and found out that all shows
had been cancelled due to the bartenders serving minors on
previous nights. We hear the guy still got paid, but that
they had never been able to reach him (or tried) to tell him he
had no show. The bartender herself was a BIG nightmare,
and actually attempted to charge us what I like to refer to as
the "out-of-towners fee" in the amount of $4/head, stating it
was a PRIVATE CLUB . . . after we had already been in there a
good ten minutes speaking to someone we'd met in town days
before - and his roommate - about dreams, had shown our I.D.'s,
and planned to have dinner there . . . by the way, the front
door was wide open upon our arrival, with no bouncer, and no
sign stating the private classification of the club. No
band, no food after a full day of filming with nothing being
eaten all day, and we had walked in the cold quite a long way
from the campground to and from the restaurant/bar/crappy club
just to see this guy's show, because he had even given us a CD
when we met him in the park. We really enjoyed it, and
were anxious to film him and speak with him about releasing
songs to the film production. We can still do the latter,
but it was just a bummer how it all came down that particular
night after such a hopeful start. You see, we really DO
want to check out bands, and were just hoping this one would
work out. It seemed so perfect, so oddly planned out . . .
that a kind stranger, new to the area and in Moab to play a
show, asked US if we felt like seeing him play! We
explained we were on-the-road to film interviews AND to do just
THAT, see shows! He couldn't believe his luck (you should
have seen the excitement and how it lit up his face), and
neither could we (to finally achieve the perfect timing to see
another show)! And all because some folks at an unnamed
Moab bar had to serve minors, everyone lost out, including all
of the bar's "private" members. I'd tell you all the name,
but even bad press can be good press, so they don't even rate
that much after the way the female bartender acted and spoke.
All of that said, we're
currently in San Francisco, and we head out to Los Angeles this
coming Sunday evening, November 5th. My birthday is also
coming up on the 9th, and we plan to stay in that area at least
through then, so there is bound to be a show or two we can catch
there! If you know of anything, don't hesitate to
leave us a message on the message board or in the guestbook . .
. but NO SPAMMING or we will crush you!

We let the website visitors vote
on a new name for Matilda's replacement Winnebago, and now we have:
ADLITAM!
Although it was
certainly not our favorite, it is growing on us. I think it was slightly
creative, and apparently so did many others out there! I think "Addie" is
a cute nickname, too! Congratulations to Evan Sevy of Layton, Utah, for
submitting the winning name! Your prize will arrive during November.
It's late, and I am
exhausted from all of the editing I have done over the past twelve
hours, just with the still pictures. There are a lot of
updates on the way, and I look forward to posting many of them later
today. Jeff's got plenty to share, too. And, we're
getting back on track with restaurant reviews, so you will see those
showing up in the next few days, too!
In the meantime, please
enjoy some of the new photos we just posted. You can find them
in "our
photos" section.

They are
going really well. However, we haven't had a decent internet connection while in
L.A. -- we are pulling 1-2 bars right now, so it isn't adequate for good updates
on the website. Hollywood is a blast, to say the least, and it is a shame we
have to move on from here today. We've managed to park for free on the side of
the road in Hollywood, which is hilarious, yet limits what we can do (no popping
out the sides, running the generator, etc.) haha.

We're on the way to an evening
interview shoot with Yvette McClelland in Albuquerque, New Mexico . . . but had
to make a final pit stop for ourselves to grab a quick dinner and to let Beast
out for a moment. Interstate construction delays with 35 mph speed limits
delayed us a little bit, but we are sure the interview will be a lot of fun!
Yvette is incredibly understanding and kind, and it will be so nice to meet her
and hear about her life in the dream world.
So much has happened since we've done
updates, and then some. Let's see, there was Hollywood with the star
sightings and cream puffs . . . hanging out with my childhood best friend
Tiffany, while there, during which she really showed us a fabulous time!
Beast even got to become fast friends with her dog, Cooper, and we all hiked up
Runyon Canyon -- which is an off-leash canyon hike for dogs (and their owners).
He was terrific, and had no problems! Then, there was the great BBQ and
Monday Night Football with my old high school friend Philip, near San Diego.
He's a Los Angeles Deputy Sheriff now, and has a gorgeous wife and terribly cute
near-two-year-old! And, there was that body in the road, too. Yikes!
Anyway, we have to get rolling!
Beast and Jeff are back, and we are running a little late from the construction,
like I said! We'll have plenty of time in the next 24 hours or so to add a
lot of updates. Oh yeah, forgot to mention the death of my laptop, which
was our only way to do the updates to the website . . . but we took
it apart today and finally fixed the problem ourselves! Go, Us!
